You’ve seen the pictures in magazines and maybe watched the big tours on TV
— the winding roads, the spectacular scenery, the charming villages. Why
should pro peloton have all the fun? Why not try you own tour of Europe ?
I have bicycle-toured through almost every country in Europe from Norway to
Sicily and Croatia to Portugal, and without a doubt central Italy is my favorite
destination on a bike. Tuscany, Umbria, and the Marches combine spectacular
scenery with magnificent architecture, history, culture, great food, warm people
and unforgettable riding. The roads are smooth, the towns are close together,
and the drivers are friendly. And while the riding can be challenging, it is no
less rewarding.
There are lots of ways to bicycle tour in Italy. You can go by yourself, with a
group of friends, or as part of a commercial tour. You can carry your own gear
or rent a car and take turns driving. You can bring your own bike, you can
rent one, or you can buy one over there.
The easiest way to see Tuscany by bike is with one of the commercial bike
touring companies. There are literally dozens of companies that operate tours
in this region. These companies can book your flight, provide the bikes,
reserve the hotel rooms, tell you where eat and where to ride. They provide
guides, carry your bags, and will even carry you if necessary. All you do is show
up and have fun. But these are for-profit companies, and you will pay a
premium for the services they provide. For the first-time bike tourist or the
inexperienced cyclist, a commercial tour might be a good choice. Personally I
prefer the independence and cost-efficiency of a self-supported tour. I can
choose where I want to go, where I want to eat, and where I want to sleep. I
can go at my own pace, with friends, or alone. And I can decide to change my
itinerary due to the weather, local advice, or just because I want to. Best of all,
this freedom costs nothing. If touring on your own in Italy appeals to you, then
this guide will smooth out the ride.
